Assisted driving technology already saving lives

On Behalf of Fishman & Fishman, LLC | Feb 14, 2018 | Car Accidents |

Despite their current unavailability, there has been a great deal of publicity surrounding self-driving cars in recent years. It’s not hard to understand why New Jersey drivers might be excited about the autonomous future given the benefits touted by automakers. However, many of the lifesaving features on self-driving cars are already available in some existing models.

There are a variety of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems that can simplify driving while increasing driver safety. These systems can improve safety through advances in technology that outstrip human response times.

One of the systems growing quickly in popularity is a new form of front collision avoidance technology that automatically applies a brake if cameras or sensors detect an impending crash. These systems typically come optional on more expensive vehicles. However, many luxury brands including Volvo and Mercedes offer these and other ADAS features standard.

While technology continues to improve automobile safety, the fact remains that vehicle accidents are a continuous part of life. While autonomous cars may offer additional safety features, they also complicate other aspects of driving, including insurance coverage issues and driver regulations. As long as there are accidents on the road, drivers will have the potential to be injured. A motorist injured in a collision with either a vehicle fully operated by a human or assisted through ADAS features may have a claim for damages. These damages could include property loss, medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. A lawyer with experience in personal injury law may be able to help a victim recover those damages through a settlement or a lawsuit.
