New Jersey drunk driving accidents: Fatal hit-and-run collision

On Behalf of Fishman & Fishman, LLC | May 22, 2017 | Drunk Driving Accidents |

A young man who was set to graduate from Rutgers University this month was hit and killed by a drunk driver just two days before the commencement ceremony. This accident occurred Friday, May 12, in Linden. According to the laws of New Jersey, surviving family members of those killed in drunk driving accidents may have legal recourse.

According to reports, a 23-year-old male, who is said to have very politically active and looking forward to using his education to better the community, was making his way home when he was hit by an automobile. Sadly, he died shortly after the incident. The driver responsible reportedly fled the scene.

A 33-year-old male was eventually arrested and charged for the incident. The criminal charges filed against him include death by auto and leaving an accident scene. Court dates regarding this matter have not been reported to the public.

Drunk driving accidents such as this one are senseless affairs as they are completely avoidable. Unfortunately, numerous New Jersey residents lose their lives every year due to others operating their vehicles while impaired. In this particular case, the victim’s surviving family members may seek compensation for their losses by filing a wrongful death claim against the man deemed responsible for this incident. In order for such a claim to be successful, it will be necessary to establish negligence in court. An experienced attorney can assist this family in taking the steps required to hopefully accomplish this and achieve maximum relief for any economic and non-economic damages they have experienced.
