Last week, residents of Toms River, New Jersey were first-hand witnesses to the destructive potential of a single drunk driver.
Wilfredo Flores was driving under the influence when he received a phone call at around 8 pm. Unfortunately, when he answered the phone, he also lost control of his vehicle before crashing directly into a utility pole on Tanglewood Road.
The damage was severe. The first pole hit snapped completely in half, but that was just the beginning. The unbelievable tension placed on the electrical wires would damage a second pole. The wires would eventually snap, causing a roadside brush fire.
The eastside of Toms River was without power for hours as crews worked to put out the fire and reconnect the wires.
Flores, who had his vehicle impounded, tried to run from the scene but was apprehended by police. He’s being charged with DWI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, driving an unregistered vehicle and a cellphone violation.
A DWI can turn life into a headache
A DWI conviction can change your life. You may have your license suspended and your car impounded, be subject to hefty fines, and, in some cases, spend time behind bars.
For repeat offenders, its even worse. If your license isn’t permanently suspended, you may be forced to attach an ignition interlock device on your car.
This isn’t to mention the humiliation and shame that comes with being labeled a drunk driver. No longer able to drive, running errands and getting to work on time may now be challenges.
Considering the stakes, it’s critical to have an experienced DWI attorney by your side. They know what the prosecutors needs to prove its case and can provide a vigorous defense of your rights.
