Preventing warehouse injuries

On Behalf of Fishman & Fishman, LLC | May 16, 2018 | Workers' Compensation |

With the increasing popularity of online shopping sites, the demand for warehouse workers in New Jersey and elsewhere is on the rise. The downside to this employment surge is that warehouses can be dangerous environments for workers. However, worker injuries and deaths can be avoided if warehouse management follows proper safety regulations.

Many warehouse injuries are caused by forklift crashes and inventory falling from storage shelves. To prevent these accidents, warehouse facilities should install impact-absorbing pedestrian barriers to protect workers from potential impacts. Automation can also be used to protect workers from dangerous situations. For example, replacing a manual power jack with an electric one could reduce the risk of electrocution.

Meanwhile, many slip and fall accidents can be prevented simply by keeping a warehouse free of dust and moisture. To achieve this, warehouse managers should make sure the facility is regularly cleaned. Fire exits should also be clearly marked, and managers should routinely run fire drills to ensure workers are familiar with the company’s fire safety protocols. Finally, all warehouse workers should receive awareness training about common warehouse hazards. They must also be taught to follow all applicable rules issued by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Most warehouse workers are eligible to file for workers’ compensation benefits if they are injured on the job. These benefits help injured workers pay their medical bills and support their families while they recover. While a person could file a claim on his or her own, many people find it helpful to consult with a workers’ compensation lawyer to ensure it is properly prepared. If a claim has been rejected, a lawyer could review the claim and file an appeal.
