Recent New Jersey car accidents: 2 New Jersey grandparents perish

On Behalf of | Mar 31, 2016 | Car Accidents |

Two grandparents were recently involved in a fatal head-on car accident on their way back from an Easter egg hunt. The accident took the two grandparents’ lives and sent three of their descendants to the hospital. When car accidents caused by other drivers’ negligence either seriously injure or take the lives of New Jersey drivers and/or their passengers, the victims or their families may be entitled to file personal injury suits or wrongful death claims in relation to the accidents.

The accident occurred on a recent Friday afternoon in March, authorities said. It took place on Route 523 in Readington, Hunterdon County, around 2:45 p.m. The grandparents, as well as their son and his two children, were riding in a vehicle that was struck head-on by another vehicle. The grandparents, ages 79 and 75, were from Flemington, while their 43-year-old son, 5-year-old grandson and his 10-year-old sister were from Budd Lake. The grandparent’s son was rushed to a local medical center with minor injuries while their grandchildren were taken to separate medical centers and hospitals, with the sister possibly suffering from a broken femur, authorities said.

The other driver, a 23-year-old New Jersey man, was arrested and is now facing charges in connection with this accident. These charges include two counts of second degree death by auto, three counts of fourth degree assault by auto, reckless driving, as well as driving under the influence. He is currently being held in the Somerset County Jail, according to the Hunterdon Prosecutor’s Office.

Charges were formally filed in relation to this tragic accident, so if prosecutors are able to ultimately secure a conviction on one of the charges related to this accident, it might be used as evidence in a wrongful death claim related to the grandparents’ deaths. The conviction could help establish negligence on the part of the driver, which is required to be proved before a New Jersey civil court will consider an award of damages. New Jersey victims or their families confronted with similar tragedies caused by car accidents sometimes decide to contact personal injury attorneys to discuss their situations and assess the legal options or recourse available to them.
