How nurses can stay safe at work

Those who work in the nursing profession in New Jersey often find their work to be rewarding. However, they may also find that there are safety risks involved with doing their jobs. Thankfully, there are steps that nurses can take to stay safe and healthy while on the job.

First, it is a good idea for individuals to wash their hands whenever possible. While it may be a basic step to take, it can prevent a person from getting sick or spreading an illness to others. Another basic step that a person can take is to get a flu shot. As with hand washing, getting a flu shot can prevent an illness from being spread to others a nurse may come into contact with. Nurses should work together whenever possible to transfer a volatile patient or to move a heavy object.

When working around bodily fluids or other dangerous materials, it is a good idea to wear proper protective equipment. This could mean wearing gloves, masks or anything else needed to create a barrier against pathogens. Nurses should also be aware of the hazards of handling needles and how to do so correctly. According to OSHA, there are more than 1,000 injuries each day related to needle sticks. Knowing how to get rid of used needles is another important way to stay safe.

If an individual is hurt on the job, they might be eligible for workers' compensation benefits. This is generally true if a worker is classified as an employee. These benefits may pay medical bills related to a workplace injury or help to repay a portion of a worker's lost wages. An attorney could review a case or answer questions that a client may have about workers' compensation.
