Sayreville woman critically injured in head-on crash

When scanning headlines about traffic accidents, most residents of New Jersey instinctively focus on accidents involving one or more fatalities. Perhaps media accounts of such accidents make for more exciting reading. In terms of impact on human lives, accidents that cause serious injuries often have a greater impact on the victims’ lives. The effect of a fatal accident more or less begins and ends when the accident occurs. While the grief of the victim’s survivors can never be accurately measured, the life-long impact of a disabling injury such as a severed spinal cord or injured brain can continue to blight the life of the victim and the victim’s family for many years. A recent accident near Sayreville, NJ, demonstrates this phenomenon.

The accident

The accident occurred on Tuesday, April 6. According to the police on the scene, an Audi A4 and a Toyota Highlander collided on Bordentown Avenue, when the Audi crossed the centerline and struck the Toyota head-on. Both vehicles appeared to be heavily damaged. Police pulled the driver of the Audi from her vehicle. The woman suffered a severe head injury and was in critical condition when she reached the hospital. She was then flown by police helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where she remained in stable condition.

The woman who drove the Toyota SUV had two children the vehicle, a 7-year-old and a one-year-old. The seven year-old suffered a lower leg injury, and he was taken to the Wood Johnson Hospital by Hackensack EMS.

What happens now?

The woman who suffered head injuries may recover completed or she may spend the rest of her life significantly disabled by her head injuries. She may need to spend several weeks or months recovering from the immediate effects of the accident. Even though the 7-year-old boy suffered “only” a leg injury, his use of the injured leg may be permanent limited.

Anyone who has suffered similar injuries may wish to seek damages from the person at fault. At this point, the burden of liability appears to rest on the seriously injured driver of the Audi, but further investigation may show that the driver of the Toyota bears more than a minimum share of fault.

Retaining an attorney may help

The advice of an experienced personal injury attorney may be invaluable even at this early stage of the case. A knowledgeable lawyer can evaluate the available evidence, assist in identifying the responsible person and provide an estimate of the likelihood of recovering damages for medical expenses, lost income, future lost income due to any disability and pain and suffering.
