Workers’ compensation for repetitive motion injuries

If workers are injured on the job, they are entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. This includes injuries such as broken bones, exposure to chemicals and damage to the worker’s neck or back. Although repetitive motion injuries are common in workplaces, many employees may not be aware that they also qualify for workers’ compensation.

Repetitive motion injuries

A repetitive motion injury may be caused by many different types of work including using a computer mouse, typing, using tools, scanning items at a checkout stand and working on an assembly line. It can cause damage to muscles, tendons and nerves.

The worker’s wrists, hands, forearms, elbows, neck and shoulders can be affected along with other areas of his or her body. While they can occur with workers who have desk jobs, they can also happen in occupations like construction, cleaning and healthcare.

The symptoms of a repetitive motion injury may not be immediately apparent. Often, symptoms will start gradually and over time, they may become more intense. Workers may suffer from stiffness, swelling, weakness, sensitivity and pain that can be mild to severe.

A physician can complete range of motion tests with the injured worker and may order scans or ultrasounds to determine the extent of the injury. The worker may also be referred to a physical therapist.

Claims

In New Jersey, there are four types of benefits that may be available to injured workers. These include medical benefits which may provide coverage for physical therapy, medications, surgery and physician visits. The worker may also be entitled to temporary and permanent disability benefits.

An experienced workers’ compensation attorney can provide advice and representation to injured workers.
